Jacques Maire (France, NR), Rapporteur on strengthening parliamentary dialogue with Algeria, made the following statement:
“We are closely following the latest developments in Algeria, a key country on the southern shores of the Mediterranean. We have taken note of the announcement made by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika that he will not stand for re-election.
The Council of Europe has extensive experience in supporting democratic transitions and political reforms in Europe as well as in neighbouring regions. I encourage the Algerian authorities to take full advantage of this experience, including in the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe expert body in constitutional matters, of which Algeria is a full member.
I also hope that during the next session of the Parliamentary Assembly (8-12 April 2019), we will have the opportunity to have a direct exchange of views with our Algerian parliamentary colleagues. The purpose of my report is to intensify the parliamentary dialogue that is needed more than ever today”.
