PACE President in Riga for conference on the role of parliaments in implementing Convention standards

Liliane Maury Pasquier, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), is to make a working visit to Latvia on 9 and 10 September 2019, during which she will address a parliamentary conference in Riga on the key role of national parliaments in implementing the standards of the European Convention on Human Rights.

At the same time, she is due to hold a number of bilateral meetings with government and parliamentary leaders, including the President of the Republic, the Foreign Minister, the Deputy Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, as well as the Chairperson of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The conference – the fifth in a series organised by the Assembly since 2012 – will bring together parliamentarians from Armenia, Finland, Georgia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Republic of Moldova and Sweden, joined by international human rights experts and members of PACE’s Legal Affairs Committee. They will discuss how parliaments can act as guarantors of human rights by helping to make laws Convention-compliant and pressing governments to fully execute Strasbourg Court rulings.
