During an official visit to Greece, PACE President Petra Bayr held a series of high-level meetings with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament Athanasios Bouras and Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis, as well as with representatives of political groups represented in the Hellenic Parliament.
Particular attention was devoted to continued support for Ukraine and the importance of maintaining European unity and solidarity in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression.
The President and her interlocutors exchanged views on the European Convention on Human Rights system and the essential role of the Council of Europe in promoting democratic security across the continent. They reaffirmed their commitment to the values and principles enshrined in the Convention and to the effective implementation of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.
Regional and European stability also featured prominently in the discussions. Participants underlined the importance of multilateral co-operation and dialogue in addressing current geopolitical challenges and ensuring lasting peace and security in Europe and its neighbourhood.
The meetings provided an opportunity to review the reforms undertaken by Greece in recent years and to discuss the country's continued efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law and protect fundamental rights.
The President welcomed Greece’s strong commitment to the Council of Europe and its active contribution to advancing the Organisation’s objectives.
