The Standing Committee (*) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which brings together around 60 of the Assembly’s members, meets in Vilnius on Friday 24 May 2024.
The meeting was preceded by a working breakfast of the Women@PACE group, with the participation of Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
After the opening of the meeting by PACE President Theodoros Rousopoulos, and welcome addresses by Seimas Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen and the first post-independence Head of State Vytautas Landsbergis, parliamentarians had an exchange of views with Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis in the framework of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers.
There were current affairs debates on 'Recent challenges to democracy in Georgia', with the participation of the President of the Georgian Parliament and a Vice-President of the Venice Commission, as well as on 'The 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe: how to ensure the participation of all Europeans in the future of our Organisation?'.
The afternoon seating will open with a statement by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Leader of the Belarusian democratic forces.
The Standing Committee will then debate reports on “Ending the detention of ‘socially maladjusted’ persons”, “Children in the world of work: eradicating harmful child labour”, “Cultural heritage and climate change”, and “Quality education for children special education needs: challenges of the pandemic, war and digitalization”.
At the end of the Standing Committee meeting, parliamentarians will participate in a hearing on 'Sanctions against the Russian Federation and companies assisting with evasion', organised by the PACE Parliamentary and Electoral Cooperation Division and the Lithuanian parliamentary delegation to PACE (see separate programme)
The Standing Committee meeting will be held Friday 24 May 2024 from 9:30 to 12:45 and from 14:30 to 16:00, at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Gedimino pr. 53, Vilnius. It will be broadcast live on PACE Website.
