Standing Committee met by videoconference

The Standing Committee (*) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) met by videoconference on Friday 28 May 2021.

After the opening of the meeting by PACE President Rik Daems, who was present in Budapest, the parliamentarians held an exchange of views with Levente Magyar, Deputy Minister, Parliamentary State Secretary, Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, in the framework of the Hungarian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The discussions focused on topical issues in the framework of the Assembly's ongoing political dialogue with the Committee of Ministers.

The parliamentarians held current affairs debates on 'The urgent need to relaunch the Middle East peace process and prevent a resurgence of violence' and 'The forced landing by the Belarusian authorities on 23 May of civilian airliner Flight FR4978 and the arrest of Roman Protasevich'.

Other items on the agenda included debates on the role of young people in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, the budget of the Council of Europe (2022-2025) and the expenditure of the Assembly (2022-2023), the observation of recent parliamentary elections in Bulgaria and Albania, the role of parliaments in implementing the UN global compacts for migrants and refugees and the humanitarian action for refugees and migrants in countries in North Africa and the Middle East.
