15/07/2011 President
Strasbourg, 15.07.2011 – The autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia in Moldova is a good model for the peaceful coexistence of different national communities in one country – and could be “an inspiration” for other European countries, PACE President Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu has said at the end of a visit to the region.
Speaking today following a meeting with the Bashkan of Gagauzia Mikhail Formuzal and other officials in Komrat, Mr Cavuşoğlu said the administrative arrangements for the region – where around 4.5 per cent of Moldova’s population lives – could be used as a model for the reintegration of Transnistria.
“The Council of Europe remains ready to assist the Moldovan authorities to harmonise Gaguazia’s laws with national legislation, help clarify the distribution of competences and consolidate the status of the region,” the President added.
Mr Cavuşoğlu also visited Komrat University. In Chişinaŭ a day earlier, on 14 July, he met with the First Vice-Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Vlad Plahotniuc and the Chair of the External Policy Committee of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Corman, who is also a member of Moldova’s delegation to PACE.
Tomorrow Mr Cavuşoğlu travels on to Odessa in Ukraine, where he will take part in an international round table on “The Ukrainian Constitution and modern parliamentarism”.
