In a letter to the Speaker of the Spanish Chamber of Deputies, the PACE President today extended his condolences to the people of Spain, following yesterday’s train accident in Santiago de Compostela in which 80 people died and more than 100 were injured:
"It is with profound sadness that I learned of the horrendous train accident which happened yesterday in Spain.
This disaster happened on the eve of what was to be a festival of celebration and religious importance and it is with great emotion that I see how the people of Spain have shown their solidarity and compassion by flocking to the scene to help in whatever way they can.
My heart goes out to those who have lost dear ones and whose lives have suddenly been devastated, and I hope that the injured will soon be reunited with their friends and families.
Please allow me to extend to you – and through you, to all those affected by this terrible tragedy – my most heartfelt sympathy."
