PACE President Anne Brasseur has expressed grave concern at the arrests of a number of journalists and media representatives in Turkey over the week-end.
“Media freedom is one of the pillars of a democratic society,” said the President. “Given our past concerns about respect for freedom of expression in Turkey, there are serious questions about whether the arrest of a number of journalists and media representatives over the week-end is in line with the standards of the European Convention on Human Rights. I am gravely concerned.”
“Any pressure and intimidation on the media, as well as impediments to the safety of journalists, are unacceptable. I call on the Turkish authorities to respect freedom of the media, in line with European standards,”concluded Ms Brasseur.
