PACE to monitor investigation into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is to prepare a report on the topic “Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination and the rule of law, in Malta and beyond: ensuring that the whole truth emerges”, following a motion for a resolution signed by 114 members of the Assembly.

Pieter Omtzigt (Netherlands, EPP/CD) was today appointed by PACE’s Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights to prepare the report, and immediately declared: “It’s very important that not only the people who are guilty of murdering Daphne Caruana Galizia, but also those who commissioned the murder, [… ] are punished appropriately.”

Earlier in the day PACE President Michele Nicoletti, in an opening address to the Assembly’s spring plenary session in Strasbourg, referred to the case. Mrs Caruana Galizia’s sons had come to Strasbourg to demand truth and justice for their mother. “They knew that we do not have superpowers to solve the mystery of their mother's death […]. Nevertheless, they asked for our support; for our solidarity with the victims – not with the perpetrators – and for our commitment to use all instruments at our disposal to help them.”

“I believe that if we want to restore the confidence of new generations in democratic institutions, we owe them this commitment,” the President concluded.
