Edward Snowden will participate in a round table in Strasbourg on “the protection of whistleblowers”

Strasbourg, 11.03.2019 - A round table on whistleblowers will be organised by Sylvain Waserman (France, ALDE) on 14-15 March at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, as part of his mandate as rapporteur for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on this issue. This event, “The 48-hour whistle-blower challenge”, will include a live video contribution by Edward Snowden.

Whistleblowers and speakers – from the academic sphere, law firms and civil society – will discuss at various thematic workshops and conferences the role of whistleblowers, their means of action, and their protection, and will take stock of legislation in member States.

“Since 2010, the Council of Europe has undertaken substantial work on the issue of whistleblowers and PACE has adopted a number of resolutions and recommendations stressing the importance of improving their protection,” said Mr Waserman, who is currently preparing a report on the subject. “More effective protection of whistleblowers is a strong indicator of the healthy functioning of our democracies,” he underlined.

The round table, which is open to the press, will take place at the Council of Europe (Palais) in Strasbourg on 14 and 15 March. A video recording will be available after the event.
