Revitalisation of democracy in Europe: Parliamentary Assembly launches new committee

Revitalisation of democracy in Europe: Parliamentary Assembly launched new committee

On 29 January the Parliamentary Assembly established a Special Committee on the New Democratic Pact, demonstrating the importance that the Assembly attaches to boosting democracy in Council of Europe member states and to the Council of Europe’s initiative to launch a New Democratic Pact for Europe.

In the words of the newly-elected Chair of the Special Committee, Sir Christopher Chope: “The role of this Special Committee and its members is crucial in ensuring that a parliamentary dimension is at the heart of the New Democratic Pact."

He added: "In the face of increasing signs of democratic backsliding across the continent, the Assembly is committed to contributing to the New Democratic Pact for Europe, which aims to stop the unravelling of democracy and to boost resilience against backsliding, disinformation and authoritarianism."

"As the political engine of Europe’s human rights’ watchdog, our Assembly occupies a unique and irreplaceable position. We can lead reflection and foresight, and provide a forum for dialogue and debate across political groups and national delegations. And we will play a part in promoting the Pact at a national level, within our respective parliaments and constituencies."

"We will build on the work already initiated by the ad hoc Committee of the Bureau on the Pact, which held four very productive meetings between October and December last year.”

The work of the Special Committee in the coming months can be followed on this link. .
