The general elections to the Moldovan Parliament were held on 5 April 2009 an all the international observers and missions which monitored the electoral process have appreciated the elections as democratic and corresponding to most relevant international standards.
The violent events that followed 5 April were organised and carried out by certain forces from both inside and outside the country. As a result of these violent actions, the presidency building and the building of the parliament have been devastated. The Romanian flag was raised on the presidency building.
It is evident that on 6 and 7 April in the Republic of Moldova an attempt of state turnover was undertaken, targeting the current leadership as well as the democratic state institutions, acting against European principles, standards and values.
The Moldovan authorities declared several times that it is extremely important to conduct an objective investigation on the forms and methods of participation of the Romanian citizens and authorities in preparing and carrying out the events of 7 April. The relevant information at the disposal of the Moldovan authorities is being collected in a solid database. As confirmation of the fact that the events that followed 5 April were supported at the highest level in Romania, serve the recent declarations made by the Romanian President Basescu addressed to the current leadership of the Republic of Moldova, including his statement on 14 April in the Romanian Parliament.
