Organisation of a European Symposium on the Protection of Fresh Water

The Assembly,

1. Recalling its Recommendation 555 (1969), on a draft European Convention on the Protection of Fresh Water against Pollution ;
2. Recalling its Recommendation 629 (1971), on the pollution of the Rhine Valley water-table ;
3. Considering its decision in 1972 (Resolution 509) "to give top priority, in the years to come, to the protection and improvement of the living environment of the European peoples", and the instruction given to its competent committees "to keep themselves informed, with the help of specialists, of the latest results of research in this field" ;
4. Considering the consequent responsibility of its members as regards both the speedy application of the European Convention on the Protection of Fresh Water against Pollution at national level, and any further proposals for strengthening the European system for the protection of fresh water,
5. Resolves :
a to organise a European symposium on the protection of water at the end of 1974, on the basis of its Resolution 227 (1962) and in close cooperation with the European Federation for the Protection of Waters (EFPW) ;
b to include in the agenda for that symposium :
consideration of the implications for European environmental policy of the new European Convention on the Protection of International Fresh Waters ;
consideration of the problems of European cooperation in the protection of transfrontier ground water ;
consideration of new ways of producing and conserving European supplies of fresh water ;
consideration of the various aspects of regional and local transfrontier cooperation in the protection of water ;
c to instruct its Committee on Regional Planning and Local Authorities to take steps to organise the symposium and report back on its conclusions
d to invite the other committees concerned with certain aspects of the question, particularly the Legal Affairs Committee, the Committee on Science and Technology and the Committee on Agriculture, to take part in the symposium.
