Video surveillance of public areas

Recommendation 1830 (2008)

Author(s):
Parliamentary Assembly
Origin
Assembly debate on 25 January 2008 (9th Sitting) (see Doc. 11478, report of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, rapporteur: Mr Sharandin). Text adopted by the Assembly on 25 January 2008 (9th Sitting).
Thesaurus
1. The Parliamentary Assembly refers to its Resolution 1604 (2008) on video surveillance of public areas.
2. Considering the work undertaken under the authority of the Committee of Ministers, and especially that of the European Committee on Legal Co-operation (CDCJ), which led to the elaboration of the guiding principles for the protection of individuals with regard to the collection and processing of data by means of video surveillance of 2003 – and convinced that this subject merits more thorough analysis – the Assembly recommends that the Committee of Ministers organise a conference on video surveillance. Such a conference should involve, inter alia, persons possessing expertise on video surveillance, both in the public and private sectors, as well as representatives of civil society.
