Meeting in accordance with the provisions of Rule 6 of the Rules of Procedure, the Committee appointed for the verification of credentials has examined the nomination papers of the Representatives to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe and of their Substitutes.
The credentials of the following Member States, certified and transmitted by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs, called for no comment; Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Netherlands, German Federal Republic, United Kingdom, the Saar, Sweden and Turkey.
In the case of Greece the credentials transmitted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on 23rd April nominate M. Sophianopoulos as Representative and M. Tsirimokosas Substitute. The Committee was informed, however, that by a recent decision of the Greek National Assembly M. Tsirimokos has been appointed as Representative in place of M. Sophianopoulos, who was unable to travel to Strasbourg. Pending official confirmation from the Greek Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Committee has postponed its decision; M. Tsirimokos was authorised to attend as Substitute under the provisions of Paragraph 4 of Rule 6 of the Rules of Procedure.
The Irish Government has not yet transmitted to the Secretariat-General the list of its Representatives and Substitutes. The Committee proposed that the Assembly postpone its decision until their credentials are received.
In the case of Iceland M. Josefsson, a former Representative to the Assembly, has let it be known that M. Hafstein, nominated as Representative, should be regarded as a Substitute, replacing him (M. Josefsson) for this part of the Session. Since the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland has certified that M. Hafstein is a Representative, the Committee decided to approve the credentials of the Representatives named in the list transmitted by the Government of Iceland.
The Committee will hold a further meeting to consider the cases where no final decision was taken.
