We, the undersigned, declare the following:
We support the rising peace movement against the war in Ukraine,
everywhere in Europe and specially in the Russian Federation.
The aggression against Ukraine is accompanied by a crackdown
on opponents of the war and other dissidents in the Russian Federation.
As we stand in solidarity with pro-peace protests, we are
alarmed at the 14 000 people detained by Russian security forces
since the invasion began in February 2022.
Reports show police abuse and the lack of fair trial guarantees
for human rights defenders and opponents of the war.
Media exodus and nationwide criminalisation of public and
free expression in the Russian Federation are particularly worrisome.
As the situation unfolds, a continuous engagement and support
of human rights defenders, democratic forces and independent media
in the Russian Federation is crucial.
We recall that the Russian Federation must guarantee the application
of the European Convention on Human Rights and United Nations treaties
also to persons within its own jurisdiction, securing their right
to liberty, expression and with an absolute ban on torture.
We ask all member States to take a united and resolute support
with pro-peace movements. We ask them to undertake initiatives to
secure the presence of international and human rights organisations
to document possible violations of human rights.
