The Assembly,

Noting that the Committee of Ministers, after congratulating the Assembly on the work it has done in connection with the Saar problem, has expressed the hope that a solution based upon that work will soon be reached ;

Expressing its gratitude to the Committee on General Affairs and its Rapporteur for the contribution they have made to an equitable lasting solution of the Saar problem, which, after having been a barrier to European unity, may become one of its foundations ;

Recognising that the acceptance by the Governments of France and the German Federal Republic of the proposals of the Committee on General Affairs defining the European Statute of the Saar as the basis of the bilateral negotiations, constitutes a success for European parliamentary co-operation in a field hitherto reserved for traditional diplomatic relations,

1 Expresses the profound hope of all the peoples represented in the Assembly that the present bilateral negotiations come to a successful conclusion in the immediate future ;
2 Recalls its Recommendation 57 of 25th September, 1953, in the hope that the conditions for the holding of the International Conference may soon be fulfilled ;
3 Decides to continue its examination of the Saar question as a whole during the second part of the Sixth Ordinary Session in September, 1954.
