In 2009, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted Resolution 1648 (2009) on the humanitarian consequences of the war between Georgia and Russia and Resolution 1664 (2009) on the humanitarian consequences of the war between Georgia and Russia: follow-up given to Resolution 1648 (2009).
In the latter, the Assembly decided to continue to follow closely the implementation of those Resolutions.
The Assembly mandated the Committee to continue this task. The Committee has carried out this task over the last 3 years and its rapporteur has paid extensive visits to the region to ensure this follow up. This mandate has come to an end and a new mandate is therefore required.
While the urgent humanitarian needs following the conflict between Georgia and Russia in 2008 were largely dealt with, there exist important long term humanitarian challenges.
The Assembly should continue and finish its on-going work with a view to finalising a report and to present recommendations in the near future.
