PACE rapporteur, ending visit: the Council of Europe stands with Ukraine

Piero Fassino (Italy, SOC), rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on The political consequences of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine, ending a visit to the country, said that “yesterday's meeting held in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian delegations failed to produce any results, as did the previous meetings in Istanbul and Riyadh. The Russians rejected Ukraine's proposals for a ceasefire and a Zelenskyy-Putin summit. This confirms that Moscow has no intention of ending its war of aggression, as evidenced by the intensification of fierce bombing of Ukrainian cities.”

Through the extensive programme of meetings I held with representatives of the government, parliament, religious denominations, local authorities, civil society and diplomatic representatives, I was able to observe the firm determination with which Ukraine continues to resist Russian aggression, expressing at the same time its willingness to pursue a just and secure peace. In this, I saw how much the Ukrainians rely on the support of Europe, its countries and its institutions,” he said.

“I assured my interlocutors of the full and determined support of the Council of Europe, which intends to stand by Kyiv through the implementation of the Action Plan for Ukraine, through the Register of Damage for Ukraine - which has already collected 40,000 claims - and through the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.”
