Statement by the PACE Middle East Rapporteur on the anniversary of the 7 October 2023 terrorist attacks

PACE Middle East Rapporteur: Gaza’s pain must end

“Today marks two years since the horrific attacks of 7 October 2023, when Hamas brutally killed more than 1,200 innocent people in Israeli towns and communities and abducted 251 others. We remember those who were murdered and those who are still held captive in inhumane conditions,” said Dora Bakoyannis (Greece, EPP/CD), rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on the situation in the Middle East.

“The war that followed has brought great suffering to both Palestinians and Israelis, and civilians continue to pay the highest price.

Achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East must be our top priority. President Trump’s twenty-point plan offers a path forward - a chance for a lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and a real opportunity for peace and stability in the region,” she added.

“I welcome today’s negotiations in Egypt and urge all members of the Parliamentary Assembly to support this shared goal of peace,” Ms Bakoyannis concluded.
