The General Rapporteur on media freedom and safety of journalists of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Valentina Grippo (Italy, ALDE), made the following statement today:
“I am deeply concerned by the seven-year prison sentence handed down to French journalist Christophe Gleizes by an Algerian Court of Appeal on 3 December, which confirmed a verdict delivered on 29 June for ‘glorifying terrorism’ and ‘possessing publications for propaganda purposes harmful to national interests’.
Mr Gleizes is a freelance sports journalist who was simply doing his job by reporting on the football club Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie. I urge the Algerian authorities to release him immediately.”
