07/04/2026 Equality and Non-Discrimination
On the eve of International Romani Day (8 April), Georgios Stamatis (Greece, EPP/CD), General Rapporteur on Roma and Travellers, made the following statement:
"On International Romani Day and throughout the “Opre Roma!” month, we celebrate the rich heritage, resilience and contributions of Roma communities in Europe and beyond. Since the landmark first World Romani Congress in 1971, this day has honoured the history of the Roma and called for an end to discrimination which particularly affects young people, women and girls, while promoting equality, education and inclusion.
In my capacity as General Rapporteur, I will do my utmost to raise awareness and promote education about the historical discrimination faced by the Roma, epitomised by the Holocaust of the Romani people. Remembrance and knowledge of the past are essential to prevent and combat the prejudice that is still deeply entrenched today.
I call on national authorities, particularly parliamentarians, to support this endeavour, and I trust that members of the Parliamentary Assembly, united for justice and dignity, will join me in this effort."
