04/04/2008 Migration, International Protection and Economic Co-operation
In St. Petersburg today, the International Parliamentary Conference on the globalisation of migration processes and problems of legal regulation, as jointly organised by the PACE and the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the CIS (IPA CIS), adopted a declaration inviting CIS and Council of Europe member States to develop common strategies for framing laws and policies on migration.
The Conference participants asked the parliaments and governments of member States to co-operate “in order to elaborate international legal mechanisms to counteract irregular migration more effectively, including trafficking in human beings”.
They also encourage the PACE to “give political impetus to improve the legal framework for migration policies, based on the principles of social cohesion, peaceful coexistence and the protection of human rights”.
This declaration will be submitted to the 8th Conference of European Ministers responsible for Migration Affairs in Kyiv on 4 and 5 September 2008.
