Strasbourg, 01.04.2009 – The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe and the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Sub-Committee on Equal Participation of Women and Men in Decision-Making will be holding a conference on the theme: “status and political participation: women as agents of change in the Euro-Mediterranean region” in Lisbon on 2 and 3 April 2009.
Lydie Err (Luxembourg, SOC), Chairperson of the Sub-Committee, José Mendes Bota (Portugal, EPP/CD), Vice-Chairperson of the PACE Equal Opportunities Committee, Christine McCafferty (United Kingdom, SOC), Chairperson of the PACE Social Affairs Committee, and other members of PACE will speak about the participation of women in politics, society and economic life and changes in family codes and women’s rights in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
Nouzha Skalli, Minister for Social Development, Family Affairs and Solidarity (Morocco), and Isabel Martínez Lozano, Secretary General for Equality Policies (Spain) will take part alongside parliamentarians, representatives of governments and local and regional authorities, academics and NGO from Euro-Mediterranean region (Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Turkey).

The Conference will open on 2 April at 9.30 a.m.at the Luso-American Foundation (Rua do à Lapa, ). It is organized with the support of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of Committee of Ministers.
