PACE concerned about OECD countries’ debt levels

PACE today expressed concern about the generally deteriorating state of OECD member countries’ public finances, with debt ratios in some that have reached “record and unsustainable levels”. States should return their economies to a sound footing to better withstand future crises, the parliamentarians said.

The enlarged Assembly – including parliamentarians from the OECD’s non-European states – also welcomed the promotion of rational energy policies, and said it looked forward to OECD membership for Chile, Estonia, Israel, Russia and Slovenia, but only on terms of full respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
