The countries of the former Yugoslavia must redouble their efforts to achieve reconciliation

Fifteen years after the conflicts that ravaged the territory of the former Yugoslavia, the countries of the region must redouble their efforts to achieve "full reconciliation and Euro-Atlantic integration". In a resolution adopted unanimously today, and in line with the conclusions of the rapporteur, Pietro Marcenaro (Italy, SOC), the PACE invites the countries concerned to treat the issue of missing persons as a priority, co-operate fully with the ICTY on war crime prosecution, ensure the full protection of witnesses, give support for the return and reintegration of refugees and settle outstanding border disputes.

With regard to the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Assembly recommends that it "take urgent steps to respect its commitments as a member of the Council of Europe and undertake comprehensive key reforms, including constitutional reforms" and strengthen the functioning of its democratic institutions.

The Assembly also stresses the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue in the region and offers itself as a platform for such dialogue.
