“Within our legacy there are lessons to be learnt” said Robert Walter (United KIngdom, EDG) in Strasbourg today, opening a current affairs debate on the political and humanitarian consequences of the situation in Syria and Libya. He expressed the value of this European experience to be able to help those countries in the Arab world with the desire to achieve democracy. However he highlighted the “need to lead from behind” stating that “this is not the time to dictate solutions” but “to be ready to step in and help if we are invited”.
