Serbia makes ‘significant progress’, but PACE is not yet ready to end monitoring

Strasbourg, 25.01.2012 – Serbia has made “significant progress” on honouring its obligations and commitments since the Assembly’s last resolution in 2009, according to PACE – but there are four areas where it could do more before the Assembly’s monitoring procedure can be finally closed.

Approving a report by Davit Harutyunyan (Armenia, EDG) and Indrek Saar (Estonia, SOC), the parliamentarians congratulated the Serbian authorities on a series of “impressive reforms”, and said it had also established a climate of political stability, making considerable progress towards EU accession, co-operating with the Hague Tribunal and playing a constructive role in the region, including establishing a peaceful ongoing dialogue with Pristina.

However, the parliamentarians called for further progress in four key areas: full implementation of changes to the justice system, stronger measures against corruption, a more independent media, and an improved climate for minorities, especially Roma.
