Reforming the European Court is now ‘the responsibility of all of us’

It is now up to all players – the European Court of Human Rights, national governments, the Committee of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly – to ensure that the Brighton Declaration is put into effect, said Hans Franken (Netherlands, EPP/CD), opening a current affairs debate today on the future of the Court.

Praising the British Chairmanship for its work to reach an agreement, he pointed out: “There is now an action plan, based on the consensus of all the States Parties, to tackle the overwhelming backlog of cases. […] The functioning of the Court is not someone else’s problem; it is the responsibility of all of us.”
