St Petersburg, 12.04.2013 – The heads of the parliamentary arms of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Council of Europe have hailed the dynamic co-operation which exists between the two bodies, describing it as “an excellent example of parliamentary diplomacy”.
In a statement issued following a jointly-organised conference in St Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko and Jean-Claude Mignon said the 15 years of events and meetings between their two assemblies – covering issues such as intercultural dialogue, migration, security and the environment – had enabled parliamentarians to interact, exchange ideas and share views.
This dialogue “facilitates the development of a common legal framework for the Eurasian continent based on fundamental values and standards of democracy, human rights and the rule of law,” the two leaders said.
