25/04/2013 Session
“Fleeing the conflict in Syria, 1.3 million people have found refuge in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. Given the enormous efforts of these countries to handle this situation, we must remind the international community of its duty of solidarity, but also the need for political support to stop the flow of refugees from becoming a destabilizing factor in the region."
With these words, Pietro Marcenaro (Italy, SOC) opened this morning’s current affairs debate on Syrian refugees and international assistance held by the Assembly. Mr. Marcenaro also recalled that the Assembly’s Sub-Committee on the Middle East of the Assembly had recently visited the Za'atri refugee camp when it warned that the urgent need of support of the international community was necessary to meet the huge needs of the refugees.
