Following an exchange of views on the tragic sinking of a boat on the shores of Lampedusa with the Chairperson of the Italian PACE delegation, Sandro Gozi, in the Assembly Bureau on Friday 4 October, President Jean-Claude Mignon has the firm intention to go himself to Lampedusa on the occasion of his official visit to Italy from 10 to 11 October. He said he was “deeply shocked by these terrible tragedies which unfortunately occur again and again" and appealed to member States for swift and specific action to make sure there are no more.
On the occasion of his official visit to Rome, the President is due to meet the Speaker of the Senate, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Integration, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and the Italian delegation to PACE.
