Bucharest: Regional Conference on violence against women and the Istanbul Convention

Parliamentarians from Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Republic of Moldova and Serbia will gather in Bucharest on 25 November on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to discuss the added value of the Istanbul Convention and steps towards its signature and ratification.

Valeriu Stefan Zgonea, President of the Chamber of Deputies, will open the conference together with Tina Acketoft (ALDE, Sweden), Chairperson of the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The conference is organised by the Parliamentary Network Women Free from Violence and the Romanian Parliament, thanks also to a voluntary contribution by the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. Ana Birchall, Network member for Romania, will chair the event. “I am very pleased to have this conference at the Romanian Parliament and am confident it will be rapidly followed by the signature and ratification of the Istanbul Convention by Romania”, she said.
