28/01/2014 Session
It is urgent to combat racism and intolerance through a strategic approach that strengthens the legal framework and includes greater efforts to ensure its effective implementation.
Adopting a text by Jonas Gunnarsson (Sweden, SOC), the Parliamentary Assembly said today that such strategy should place emphasis on “prevention, awareness-raising and human rights education”, while relying on the internet and social media as valuable tools to reach out to a wider public.
Government representatives and more generally politicians should lead the efforts to eliminate racism, hatred and intolerance with resolve and by example, “publicly challenging, rejecting and condemning expressions of hatred, from whatever quarters they come”.
