Upholding child protection and the well-being of children in times of crisis

“In times of tight budgetary constraint, our primary aim should be to uphold and extend basic social and health services to children. Children should be helped and not merely sustained by our welfare systems in times of crisis,” said Stella Kyriakides (Cyprus, EPP/CD), PACE General Rapporteur on children, speaking today in Dubrovnik at the conference on the implementation of the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child 2012-2015, “Growing with Children’s Rights”.

Liliane Maury Pasquier (Switzerland, SOC), former Chair of the Social Affairs Committee, outlined the achievements and successes at intergovernmental and parliamentary level of the Council of Europe’s ONE in FIVE campaign, also highlighting the pitfalls and future prospects. In this connection she said that the Assembly, in a forthcoming report, would propose extending the campaign for a further year, until 2015, and instituting a European Day to Combat Sexual Violence against Children with effect from 2016.
