Rapporteurs call for investigation of attack on former Georgian Ambassador to the Council of Europe

Michael Aastrup Jensen (Denmark, ALDE) and Boriss Cilevičs (Latvia, SOC), Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) co-rapporteurs on the honouring of obligations and commitments by Georgia, today called on the Georgian authorities to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the attacks on leading United National Movement (UNM) members Nugzar Tsiklauri and Zurab Tchiaberashvili (former Georgian Ambassador to the Council of Europe), particularly in view of the UNM’s allegations that these attacks were politically motivated.

“During an election period, in particular, attacks of this kind and allegations that they were politically motivated cause concern, and they need to be properly and impartially investigated, even if only to dispel the allegations of possible political motivation, which could have a deterrent effect on opposition activists,” the co-rapporteurs stressed.

They intend to present their next report on the functioning of democratic institutions in Georgia during the PACE Autumn plenary session in Strasbourg (29 September-3 October).
