Children’s access to child-friendly health and social services: visit by the rapporteur to Greece

Strasbourg, 10.10.2004 - Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) rapporteur Stella Kyriakides (Cyprus, EPP/CD) will make a fact-finding visit to Athens on Monday 13 October, in the framework of the preparation of a report on “Improving children’s access to child-friendly health and social services”, on behalf of PACE’s Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development.

Meetings are scheduled with the President of the Standing Committee of Social Affairs of the Greek Parliament, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Labour, Social Insurance and Welfare, the Minister of Health, the Head of the Greek delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly, the Director of ‘Doctors of the World - Greece’ and the paediatrician of this NGO, as well as the Head of the Directorate for Mental Health and Social Welfare of the Child Health Institute. A brief encounter is also foreseen with the President of the Greek Parliament.

In addition to identifying the main obstacles for children in accessing health and social services in times of economic crisis and austerity, Ms Kyriakides intends to promote relevant Council of Europe standards in this field. She is planning similar visits to Moldova and Spain in 2015.
