Visit of the detention centre for migrants at Coquelles, near Calais

A delegation of French parliamentarians, also members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), is to make a visit on Friday 14 November to the administrative detention centre at Coquelles, near Calais, where irregular migrants and asylum seekers are held.

On that occasion, they will meet the Mayor of Calais, the sous-Préfet, the Public Prosecutor and representatives of the customs service, border police (PAF) and NGOs.

The delegation will hold a preparatory meeting the previous day in Paris, with an expert on monitoring detention conditions and a former member of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT).

Many parliamentarians in Europe are entitled to visit places of detention under their national mandate, and France is one of the countries concerned. The PACE Committee on Migration has produced a guide to publicise this right more widely and to encourage parliamentarians to visit such detention centres and assist them to do so.

Similar visits are planned in the near future to the United Kingdom and Greece, for parliamentarians from those countries.
