PACE urges fresh negotiations on EU accession to the European Convention on Human Rights

PACE has called for negotiations on EU accession to the European Convention on Human Rights to resume “without delay” following the recent opinion by the EU Court of Justice.

“The obstacles identified by the EU’s Court of Justice … must be overcome as soon as possible, in line with political commitments made by all sides, as reflected in the Lisbon Treaty,” the Assembly said in a draft resolution, based on a report by Kerstin Lundgren (Sweden, ALDE).

The Assembly reaffirmed its strong support for strengthening the partnership between the Council of Europe and the EU, noting that co-operation and contacts were “increasing steadily”.
