PACE rapporteur expresses concern over LGBT ‘propaganda’ law in Kyrgyz Republic

PACE rapporteur Tinatin Khidasheli (Georgia, ALDE) has expressed deep concern at a draft law currently being discussed in the Kyrgyz Parliament which criminalises ‘propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations’ in a letter to Kyrgyz Speaker Asilbek Jeenbekov.

“When the Kyrgyz Parliament was granted ‘Partner for Democracy’ status with the Assembly in 2014, it pledged to work towards Council of Europe values,” said Ms Khidasheli, whose mandate as rapporteur is to monitor the partnership.

“The new law, if adopted, would clearly not be in line with Council of Europe principles, which include combating discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity,” she added.

“In my letter, I pointed out that PACE had explicitly named fighting LGBT discrimination as a key issue for the Kyrgyz Republic in the resolution granting partnership. I therefore strongly urge the Parliament to reconsider the draft law,” the rapporteur concluded.
