The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the monitoring of Azerbaijan, Pedro Agramunt (Spain, EPP/CD) and Tadeusz Iwinski (Poland, SOC), have expressed their concern following the refusal by the Azerbaijani authorities to allow Human Rights Watch researcher Giorgi Gogia to enter the country in order to perform his trial monitoring work last week.
They recall that full respect for the rule of law is a concern in Azerbaijan, where recent developments have contributed to the widespread perception of a system of selective justice. In order to restore trust, the authorities should do all they can to improve the transparency of the judicial process, including by allowing civil society to monitor court trials, they said.
