PACE welcomes Turkish authorities’ proposal to become a major contributor to the Council of Europe budget

PACE welcomed the Turkish authorities’ decision to “reinforce the Council of Europe by proposing to become a ‘major contributor’” in 2016. In a resolution adopted today on the basis of the report by Rudy Salles (France, EPP/CD) on PACE expenditure for 2016-2017, the Assembly called on member states to accept this proposal without reducing the amount of their own contributions to the Organisation’s budget. PACE expects the Turkish authorities’ decision to be approved by the Committee of Ministers.

It also noted the proposal to increase the number of seats allocated to Turkish parliamentarians in the Assembly in order to remedy the under-representation of Turkey in terms of population, but stressed that adopting Turkish as a working language could only be financed with additional resources as the Assembly’s budget cannot cover such an expense.
