Committee regrets absence of dialogue with FRONTEX

At its meeting on 3 June 2015, PACE’s Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons was informed that Fabrice Leggeri, Executive Director of the EU’s border agency FRONTEX, had declined the invitation for an exchange of views on the challenges with regard to irregular migration across the Mediterranean Sea to be held at the meeting during the forthcoming parliamentary session of the Assembly (22-26 June 2015).

“The committee members very much regret this absence of dialogue with representatives of FRONTEX on issues of utmost concern for them in their double capacity as members of national parliaments and of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe,” said the committee’s Chair, Thierry Mariani (France, EPP/CD), noting that it is the second time that no representative of FRONTEX has been available during the PACE session. Last April, Mr Leggeri also had other commitments.

“It is disappointing that in the present situation, when migration questions have gained such importance on the European agenda, FRONTEX managers do not consider it useful to hold discussions with national parliamentarians,” he concluded.
