Violence against women is a gross violation of human rights

Adopting unanimously a report on tackling violence against women prepared by Sahiba Gafarova (Azerbaijan, EC), the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination stressed that all violence against women is a form of discrimination and a gross violation of human rights.

The text underlines the key role of parliamentarians and national parliaments in monitoring the implementation of the Istanbul Convention. “With the entry into force of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (CETS No. 210, the ‘Istanbul Convention’), a major milestone was achieved. It proved violence against women had become an issue of great concern ranking high on political agendas. The Council of Europe member states should keep the momentum.”

The report also brings to light good practices already implemented by Council of Europe member states “as a possible source of inspiration”. It is therefore meant to complement the work led by the Convention’s monitoring body (GREVIO), and parliamentary monitoring-related activities.

The draft resolution will be debated by the Assembly at the Standing Committee meeting on 27 November 2015.
