PACE to observe the presidential election in Belarus

A 10-member delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Reha Denemeç (Turkey, EC), today begins a four-day visit to Belarus (9-12 October) to observe the conduct of the presidential election, alongside observers from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

The delegation will meet, in particular, the candidates standing for the election, the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission and representatives of civil society and the media, before observing the ballot on 11 October.

In a declaration dated 9 September 2015, the PACE pre-electoral delegation stressed that the Belarussian authorities had invited a large number of international organisations to observe the upcoming presidential election, without imposing constraints on their work, according to the international commitments of Belarus.
