16/12/2015 Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons
To mark International Migrants Day on 18 December, parliamentarians will visit detention centers and other administrative facilities for irregular migrants and asylum seekers, in different member States (Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” and Ukraine), at the joint initiative of the President and the Migration Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
PACE President Anne Brasseur will visit three reception centres for migrants in Luxembourg, together with the Minister for Family and Integration of Luxembourg.
These visits will be organised in the framework of the PACE’s on-going programme to support and promote parliamentarians’ visits to immigration detention centres across Europe, with the objective of raising awareness of immigration detention and the need for monitoring of the conditions in which it takes place.
In this connection, the Migration Committee in the past organised visits to detention centres in Calais and Strasbourg (France), Schiphol (Netherlands), Luxembourg, and Zurich (Switzerland).
