Moldovan credentials challenged at PACE on grounds of balance

The credentials of the Moldovan delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly were challenged on procedural grounds at the opening of the Assembly’s session today in Strasbourg.

Making the challenge, Jordi Xuclà (Spain, ALDE) said the Moldovan list was “incomplete” and did not fully reflect the political balance in the parliament, as required under the Assembly’s rules. He was supported by at least ten other members in the Debating Chamber, from at least five other national delegations.

The matter was referred to PACE’s Committee on Rules of Procedure, which will now draw up a recommendation, before the Assembly takes a final decision later in the week. Until then, the Moldovan delegation may sit provisionally with the same rights as other members.

The credentials of the other 45 national delegations were approved (the Parliament of the Russian Federation did not transmit credentials for the 2016 Ordinary Session).
