“I welcome the decision of the World Health Organization declaring the recent cluster of neurological disorders and neonatal malformations reported in the Americas region a Public Health Emergency of International Concern,” Silvia Bonet (Andorra, SOC), the rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on handling international public health emergencies, said today.
“This is an important step forward, which should encourage countries to co-operate more closely in conducting epidemiological studies to establish the strongly suspected causal link between these disorders and the Zika virus. It should also encourage them to invest more resources into preventive measures and accessible treatments,” she added.
