Council of Europe European Diplomas: 12 municipalities win the award in 2016

At a ceremony today at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Stella Kyriakides (Cyprus, EPP/CD), Chair of the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development and Jean-Claude Frécon (France, SOC), Chair of the PACE Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize, awarded the European Diploma 2016 to the mayors of the 12 winning municipalities.

The winners are:

Colombelles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Vitry-sur-Seine (France)
Baiersdorf, Rodgau, Wolfsburg and Wolnzach (Germany)
Carpignano Sesia, Formigine and Riolo Terme (Italy)
Jönköping (Sweden)
Nilüfer (Turkey)

The European Diploma not only acknowledges the work done at European level by the prize-winning municipalities, but also serves as an incentive to develop their work further through contacts with their twin and friendship towns.

The European Diploma was first presented by the Parliamentary Assembly in 1988. The winning municipalities may subsequently be awarded the Flag of Honour, the Plaque of Honour and finally the Europe Prize, the highest distinction (awarded in 2016 to the Spanish city of Gerona).
