2016 Europe Prize presented to Girona during ceremony

A delegation of parliamentarians, led by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Pedro Agramunt, and the Chairperson of the PACE Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize, Jean-Claude Frécon (France, SOC), presented the Europe Prize to Marta Madrenas i Mir, Mayor of Girona (Spain), the Prize-winner for 2016, on Friday 8 July.

Girona is very active in its many initiatives which demonstrate its strong commitment to Europe. It seeks to be an educational and solidarity-based city and supports projects to raise awareness among the local population of the causes of economic inequalities and to promote tolerance, dialogue, the values of a culture of peace and respect for human rights. Girona received the Flag of Honour in 1984 and the Plaque of Honour in 2013.

This annual prize honours towns and cities for their active promotion of the European ideal, such as twinnings, European events and exchange visits. It consists of an itinerant trophy, a medal, a diploma and a scholarship to finance a study visit within Europe for young people from the winning town.
